The Nipping Stage: Tips for Correction and Progress

The nipping stage is a normal phase in a puppy's development, but when will the shark biting behavior end? Typically, puppies will grow out of this behavior before they turn one year old. However, you don’t have to passively wait for this chaotic stage to pass. There are effective ways to correct this behavior and help your puppy move past the nipping stage.

One approach to addressing nipping is to recognize when your dog is more prone to this behavior.

Is your puppy overstimulated?

Are they trying to communicate discomfort?

Are they seeking attention?

Understanding the triggers can help you remove your puppy from situations where they might feel overwhelmed. For instance, if your puppy nips to get your attention, remove yourself from the situation until they calmly approach you. This will teach them that calm behavior is rewarded with affection, while nipping leads to your withdrawal.

Remaining calm when correcting nipping behavior is crucial, especially during moments of high energy like the zoomies. Using a gentle voice and consistent commands can help your puppy understand your boundaries. Reinforcing the "no" command is essential for establishing these boundaries as your puppy grows and becomes more curious about their environment and your limits. With patience and consistency, you can guide your puppy through this stage and foster better behavior as they mature.
