Training Your Dog for Short and Sweet Bathroom Breaks: A Guide for Busy Mornings

When you’re running late for work in the morning, taking a long walk with your pup before you leave is not a great idea to include on your morning to-do list. Afternoon and weekend walks, on the other hand, are an enjoyable way to spend quality time and bond with your pup. But how do you communicate these different expectations to your dog? How do you let them know it's a quick bathroom break before work and a leisurely stroll later?

To help your pup understand the difference, try using a cue word to indicate you want them to take a quick potty break. The first step is to identify an area your pup usually goes to for potty breaks. Taking them here when you want them to go potty quickly can help them associate the particular spot with the cue word you will use. Next, find a simple phrase or word, such as “Go potty,” that will indicate to your pup you want them to go to the bathroom. When your dog begins to go to the bathroom, say “Go potty” to them in a natural tone of voice. Afterwards, reward them with treats or affection! Repeat numerous times in your daily routine. After some practice, your pup will learn the association between your cue “Go potty” and the action of going potty. Now you can begin to use your cue words before they start going to the bathroom— and before you know it, shorter bathroom breaks are a part of your new routine!

The more you practice this method, the more your pup will become accustomed to shorter bathroom breaks! Practice takes patience, as each unique pup responds differently to training. For more training tips and insights into unlocking your dog’s full potential, contact Pat’s Pack today!
